This page explains what PhotoText.com collects when you use it, why, and what you can do about it. If anything is unclear, write to support@phototext.com.
What we collect
- Your account: your name and email address. If you log in with Google, Facebook or X, we also get your account ID on that service and your profile picture. If you sign up with email, we store your password only as a secure, one-way hash.
- Sign-up and login details: the IP address and browser (user agent) you signed up with, and the IP address, browser and time of each login.
- Your projects: when you're logged in, the photos you open in the editor and your edits (text, styles and adjustments) are saved to your account so you can come back to them.
- PDFs: if you open a PDF, we keep the file with your project until you delete it, so you can come back to every page.
- Credits and payments: your credits balance and history. Payments are handled by Stripe. We never see or store your card details, only a record that the payment went through.
Why we collect it
- To run your account, save your projects and keep track of your credits.
- To prevent fake accounts and abuse. Email and password sign-ups are checked by Verified.net, which looks at the name, email address and IP address you sign up with. Sign-ups through Google, Facebook or X are not sent to Verified.net, except that X doesn't share email addresses, so the email you give us after signing in with X is checked by Verified.net. We keep a record of each sign-up attempt (including refused ones) with its IP address, browser and the result of the check.
- To keep the service secure, for example to spot unusual logins.
- To support you and improve PhotoText. Our team may look at the photos and edits saved to your account, for example to help with a problem or to learn which features people need. We also count which editor features are used (like finding text or downloading), without the photo or its text.
- To send you emails you need, like confirming your address or resetting your password. We also send occasional emails about new features, updates and related PhotoText news. Each one has an unsubscribe link, and you can turn them off at any time in Account settings.
What stays in your browser
If you're not logged in, your photos never leave your device: text reading, editing and Magic erase run in your browser, and your last edit is kept only on your device. When you log in, the photo you're working on is saved to your account as described above.
Who we share it with
We don't sell your data. We share only what each service needs to do its job: Verified.net (your name, email address and IP address, for email and password sign-ups, and the email you give us after X sign-in), Stripe (payments), the login service you choose (Google, Facebook or X) and our email provider. When you're logged in and tap a line of text the editor isn't sure how to read, a small image of just that line and the editor's guess may be sent to Anthropic, whose AI reads the words. When you use Translate, the text found in your photo is sent to Anthropic to translate it; the photo itself isn't sent. We may also share information if the law requires it.
How long we keep it
We keep your account and projects until you delete them (see Delete your data) or ask us to close your account. Deleted projects are removed from our servers, and from our backups within 30 days. Login and sign-up records are kept for up to 12 months. Email sign-ups that aren't confirmed within 48 hours are deleted.
Your choices
- Delete any project from My projects at any time.
- Delete your whole account yourself on the Delete your data page.
- Ask us for a copy of your data, or to correct it, by writing to support@phototext.com.
Cookies
We use one cookie to keep you logged in. We don't use advertising or tracking cookies.
